Doctors Found 14 Things That Raise Your Dementia Risk. One of Them You Can Treat From Your Kitchen Table.

For 30 years, families brought their parents to my office with the same worry.

 

"Mom keeps getting confused." "Dad answers the wrong question." "We think he's slipping."

Then I tested their hearing.

But here's what kept me up at night. Some of them did go on to get dementia. And the research now shows that was not bad luck.

What the research says

In 2024, The Lancet, one of the most respected medical journals in the world, published a big report on dementia.

 

Experts found 14 things that raise your risk and that you can actually do something about. Hearing loss is on that list. And it's one of the biggest.

 

The worse your hearing gets, the higher the risk goes.
 

Researchers think there are 3 reasons:

  1. Your brain works overtime guessing the words. Less is left for memory and thinking.
  2. The hearing part of your brain gets less to do. Parts of the brain that aren't used get weaker.
  3. You pull away from people. You skip the church dinner. You stop calling friends. Being alone is on the Lancet list too.

The study that made me angry

In 2023, researchers ran the biggest study ever on hearing aids and the brain. It's called ACHIEVE.

 

They followed 977 people aged 70 to 84 with hearing loss for 3 years. Half got hearing aids. Half got health classes instead.

 

In the group most at risk, the people with hearing aids lost their memory and thinking skills 48% slower.

So deal with what you can control now, before it's too late. Hearing is one thing you can control.

I bought every hearing aid option with my own money and tested them all. On real people. Over 6 months.

 

Here's what I found.

Medicare

Medicare won't pay for dementia care. And it won't pay for your hearing aids either.

 

Medicare Part B has never covered hearing aids. Not once in 60 years.

 

You pay in your entire working life, and the one thing that could protect your brain, they won't cover.

 

Some Medicare Advantage plans give $500 to $1,000. Nowhere near enough.

 

You're on your own.

And what are you paying for? The parts inside cost about $100. I've seen the invoices.

 

The rest pays for the clinic, the sales staff, the TV ads, and the commission. Most clinic audiologists earn a percentage of what they sell you.

 

And it doesn't stop there. Batteries, repairs, replacement parts. Over 10 years, you're closer to $8,000.

For technology that costs $100 to make.

 

I spent my career watching retirees choose between their medication and their hearing. Now I know what that choice can cost their brain.

Amazon

This is where I get angry.

 

What Amazon sells for $40 are not hearing aids. They're amplifiers.

 

They make everything louder. Voices, traffic, the fridge, your own breathing. Voices stay muffled while everything else gets painfully loud.

 

That's the opposite of what your brain needs. It still has to strain to pick out the words.

 

A real hearing aid has a digital chip that makes voices clearer. That chip alone costs around $80. It's not in a $39 device.

 

If you tried Amazon and gave up, you weren't trying hearing aids. You were trying amplifiers.

We bought these for my mum who is suffering with dementia. Mum had a pair from Hidden Hearing and we paid over £3000... These are so good that we are putting the private hearing aids on hold.
